This book delivers on its promise of a personal tour. Throughfloor plans, period photos, and Laura Edge's sensory descriptions, readers are shown around America's first settlement house, one winter day in 1908. We see young Eleni from Greece, building a model of the Parthenon and sewing her own dress. Next we follow Tony as he listens to stories of heroes, practices basketball withthe Tigers, and plays the part of Little John in Robin Hood. Then Bridget arrives to talk to Jane Addams about her problems at the knitting factory. Finally we hear Jane's friends chat about plans for the future of Hull-House, transforming the lives of Chicago's poorest immigrants.

I enjoyed this book very much. The author is very insightful and gives a well-written account of this settlement house in Chicago and its people that made it famous. This quick, easy to read book is very informative and offers insight to an interesting period in our history, along with an up close account of what Hull House was actually like. This is an interesting little book and I recommend it highly for all ages.
