Maggie Gardere is single and pregnant. If that weren't enough, her parents are causing all sorts of problems because they believe she embarrassed them by getting pregnant before her society wedding. However, pastor Jake Mathison takes Maggie under his wing and tries to bring her back to the fold. The book was written in 2000, but the conclusion involves a category 4 hurricane heading towards Louisiana, which elicits many unpleasant Katrina memories. However, it also involves a very humorous situation between Jake and Maggie, who are stranded. Maggie's spiteful parents come across as almost inhuman in this book. The book addresses issues of trust, and Maggie confesses to Jake: "Can a child conceived in violence...can I love this child?" The book includes a nongraphic description of rape, but this is a powerful issue to grapple with. How will Maggie's child handle hearing about her real parents?
