Wonderful Story!

I laughed and cried. Such a beautiful story. Pain and suffering are so hard to handle, but if you let Him, God will get you through the trials. This is a story of people who trusted God and He directed their steps. I can’t wait to get the next books in this series. Proverbs 3:5-6

Very Good Well Written Novel

This book was a wonderful read of how God can help the hardest situation turn around.

Uplifting Christian Romance set in Amish Country

I don't like to give away the ending of novels. However, we all know how romances end. For the reader, then, the story is more about the journey the main characters face throughout the book. I had never read any of the Hearts of Middlefield books so, I had no expectations. But, once I got the book and started reding, I couldn't put it down. Moriah Byler married Levi Miller, twin brother of childhood friend Gabriel Miller. On the day she is going to tell her husband that she is pregnant with their first child, Levi decides to leave the order and her. Unbeknownst to Moriah, Levi is leaving for another woman who is ALSO presumably pregnant with Levi's child. Gabriel goes to confront his wayward brother and finds out about the other woman and decides to keep this information from Moriah which complicates their burgeoning relationship. When tragedy strikes again, freeing Moriah to marry again, Gabriel's 'sin of omission' in keeping the information from Moriah comes between them. The rest of the book is a dance between Gabriel and Moriah (whom I found to be a little harsh on Gabriel) Interwoven with the plot between Gabriel and Moriah, is a subplot between Moriah's brother and the betrothed of Moriah's brother's best friend. I felt that, even though these two characters were minor, they could have been developed a little more. I didn't really feel much empathy for them in comparison to Gabriel and Moriah. I liked the way Kathleen Fuller illustrates Amish life and interweaves the faith element without being too preachy. And, yes, this romance ends the way most romances end. I thought the character growth of Gabriel and Moriah more believable than most romances due to the faith element in the novel. If you like romances, particularly christian romances, this one is worth the read.

Another Amish fiction hit!

I recieved A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller through the Thomas Nelson Book Review Blogger program and am so happy that I requested this book. Kathleen Fuller has written many books but this was the first time I had heard of her - suprising since I enjoy Amish fiction and enjoy their way of life. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the author really did a great job in truthfully representing the Amish community in Ohio. If you ever have a chance to visit Middlefield, Ohio or Holmes County in general and see the Amish in the area in action, you will understand why I say that about Kathleen Fuller. While the Amish are humans and capable of human emotions - as Kathleen Fuller fully discloses, she also shows the reader of how much the Amish care for everyone - Amish or not. There is heartbreak in this book, one that could be felt through the characters while reading of their lives. The romance in this book isn't anything untoward and would be able to be read by young, unmarried women. There are feelings that are brought up between Moriah and Gabriel but are dealt with utilizing much prayer and also seperation. Eventually though God does work in His way to bring the two together so that His work can be seen. Love of God, love of family and love of community comes through loud and clear in this book which really sums up what the Amish are all about, loving God. This book was a fast, wonderful read and I would recommend it to those who are looking for anything from a light read to Amish inspirational fiction.

A great, enjoyable read

I have always been somewhat fascinated by the Amish lifestyle. But I have never gotten to known an Amish person personally. To be honest, I tend to avoid Amish fiction. I'm not exactly sure why. I guess I thought that Amish fiction would be dry and wouldn't hold my interest. The Amish way of life is so completely foreign to me. I can't even imagine what it must be like to live that way. I was also afraid that I would be unable to relate to the characters in Amish fiction due to the major cultural, religious, and lifestyle differences. But when I first saw this description for this novel, I thought it sounded interesting. I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant to start it at first. But once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I'm so glad I approached this book with an open mind and was willing to give it a chance. This book tells the story of a young Amish woman named Moriah. Even though she is young, she is forced to deal with turmoil, betrayal, loss, and heartbreak. She is strong, but she also chooses to push the people who love her the most away. Even though I have never been married myself (and I'm not Amish) I could definitely relate to Moriah's grief and her tendency to keep people at arm's length after her husband left her. Moriah also believes that her husband left because she failed as a wife. She also has trouble believing that she is worthy of love. Her husband's abandonment and betrayal seriously undermines her self-confidence and causes her to question her faith, herself, and her own judgment. The characters in this story are real people. They have real struggles. Being Amish does not exempt them from hurt and other human emotions and experiences. But the Amish are also portrayed as a tightly-knit, loving, supportive community. I think this book would be a good one for someone who wants a deeper understanding of the Amish way of life. I could never be Amish myself, but this book gave me a new respect for people who do live that way. The characters in this novel are real and quirky. There are no cookie-cutter, stereotypical, flat characters in this novel. Each character is different, but each possess a richness and depth that is unique. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to read this book, and I highly recommend it to others as well. I definitely plan on reading future works by this author.

A Man of His Word

Moriah Miller has married the man she loves. Levi was her playmate growing up, and it seemed natural for them to grow up and marry. But on their four month anniversary, when Moriah plans big news--she's having a baby--Levi springs even bigger news. He's leaving her and the Amish. He found his life among outsiders. Levi's twin, Gabriel, goes after Levi, telling Levi that Moriah is expecting, but Levi says he had an affair with another woman, his boss's daughter, and she is also expecting. He plans to give Moriah and her child up, permanently. Gabriel has always loved Moriah, but since divorce wasn't allowed among the people, Moriah will never be allowed to marry. All he can do is step in where his brother stepped out, and try to take the best care of Moriah and her child as he possibly can. Is there any hope for a brighter future? A MAN OF HIS WORD is a great Amish story. I loved getting to know Moriah and the men in her life. There is also a secondary romance between Moriah's brother, Tobias, and another young lady that was fun to watch. Like most of America, I do enjoy Amish stories, and my favorite author has always been Beverly Lewis. However, Kathleen Fuller is definitely an author I'm going to read. Her books are moving up on my favorite Amish authors list. If you love Amish fiction, then keep Kathleen Fuller's A MAN OF HIS WORD in mind.
