I read this when I was 12 or so--one of the earliest romances that I read. The heroine doesn't want her trustee to dictate who she can marry, so she bets him that she can survive on a small income and moves into a small apartment and takes care of herself. She becomes friendly with two of her gentlemen neighbors. Chenier is always good at including historical detail--in this book it's the assassination of the Prime Minister! I've kept my copy all these years and my daughter enjoyed it when I dug it out for her a few years ago.
