A View of the Unexplored Fronteir

The book A Journey to the New World is the fictional yet accurate account of the pilgrims' settlement in America, the new world, to be free from the king's religious oppression. The story is told in diary form, through young Remember Patience Whipple, making it easier for younger readers to comprehend but benefit in full. The book is the beginning of a new nation, an unexplored future of pain and suffering, joy and happiness. The book is finly illustrated; another great accomplishment by Kathryn Lasky.

Remember Patience Whipple's diary and adventure to the New World.

Remember Patience Whipple, nicknamed Mem is a young pilgrim girl, her life in danger by the notorious King James. She is aboard the Mayflower, that will one day take it's passengers to the New World. Even though she longs to see the New World, Mem is afraid of all the feathered men and women that inherit it. Days in the Mayflower are long and boring and she and her friend, Hummy are constantly annoyed by the Billington Boys. But when they set foot on the New World, a furious plague attacks her people, killing many including her mother. Her friend, Hummy soon leaves her and Mem is in despair and longs to leave on a boat to a place she once called home. But after weeks of mourning and despair, Remember catches the deadly illness and must fight for her survival. This is a wonderful diary on a pilgrim girl and I found it very enjoyable.

Remember Patience Whipple is a 12 year-old girl who is sailing on the Mayflower with her family, headed for the New World. Even a young girl has her trials to deal with; one of the least is staying out of the way of snooty Mary Chilton, and coping with a younger sister. But as I said, those are the least of her troubles.And they only escalate once they reach land. Winter is approaching, and they only have a crude cabin to serve as a house. Terrible sickness has set in, and Remember is afraid that one of her family (or even her!) will become ill also.But Remember survives her first season at Plymouth Harbor, and learns a lot along the way.This has got to be one of my favorite books. Everything was so realistic, for a long time I actually thought that it was a real diary, until I read the little thing at the end of the book-'Remember Patience Whipple is a fictional character and her diary is fictional.' What a disappointment! But as long as you're aware of this when you start reading, you shouldn't have any problem with it like I did.This book is a must for any Dear America fans. READ IT!

The First and Best(I think)

A Journey to the New World was my first Dear America book and (I think) my favorite book. The plot is good and the journey to the "New World" was even a little exciting. This book gives you a taste of the hardships, sorrows, and joys of the Pilgrims. You feel what Mem feels because her emotions come across strong. It's almost like being there.

A Pilgrim girl's new life in the New World.

Remember Patience Whipple, called Mem, is a bit frightened at the thought of the New World her family is sailing to on the Mayflower. She hears tales of strange "feathered people" who will attack the settlers. But she has more immediate concerns - the dreadful Billington boys, who mercilessly tease Mem and her friend Hummy, the ever present seasickness, and the daily boredom during the long, tedious sea voyage. But once she arrives in the New World, things become even worse. During the long, cold first winter at Plymouth, many settlers become sick and die. Mem is frightened that her family might be next. When spring comes, she thinks they are safe - until her mother falls ill and dies. Can Mem find the strength and courage to go on without her mother? And can she come to accept her future stepmother, quiet, sad Mistress Potts? What I liked best about this book is that it told what a young girl who sailed on the Mayflower and lived at Plymouth Colony might have thought and done. In making the main character a young girl, the author brought the history to life, and I really like the fictional diary format used in this series - it makes you feel really close to the characters.
