modern germany

Bought this for a class, very good overview of this era for Germany. A little dense with stats and facts but gets the job done. Fairly easy to read.

Dense yet Informative and Engaging

I just completed a semester in college studying modern German history using this book as the main written component of the course. Overall, I found it to be an absolutely wonderful companion to the course, so much so that I have decided to keep the book (and forego the money they give us students to sell back our books at the end of the semester *gasp*). When a poor college student would rather have a particular book than money, it is generally a good sign that the book is worth its weight in gold. Now, I wouldn't go so far to say that this text would make for good bedtime reading, because at times it can be highly dense and there is such an enormous number of people involved in German history that it's hard to keep them all straight. However, the text is written in a very engaging way and if you have all your faculties about you (i.e. probably not wise to drink and try and read this book) I'm certain that you'll keep up and find yourself enjoying it along the way. Also Americans, I know that many foreigners assume that we have no knowledge or respect of the history of their cultures. Unfortunately, at this early point in my studies this assumption is true for me. However, after having read this book I feel that I can truly begin to grasp how important Germany's history is to the culture of its people and to Europe. It's nice for a change to feel *somewhat* knowledgeable about another culture's roots. Ultimately, I'd recommend this book to anybody who is SERIOUS about trying to inform themselves about German history, but who usually has a difficult time memorizing dates and numbers.
