Now in its fourth edition, this critically acclaimed reference work has been thoroughly revised and expanded to include over seventy important new terms and usages from this volatile and fast-changing field.
Hawthorn's fourth edition Glossary of Contemporary Literary Theory deserves our attention. It's really an indispensible book whether you're an undergrad getting your first exposure to theory in a literature course or an initiated grad student who needs clarification on specific points. The entries in the Glossary are brief and accessible, but they are also incisive and usually broad enough in scope. You'll find the expected topics: hegemony, habitus, panopticism, readerly/writerly, and so forth. Lots of cross references. I found this book in the U library and liked it so much that I bought a copy. The first week I had it I used it to write an essay on the Shannon/Weaver Model of Communication. I only wish that I had discovered it sooner.
