Donald wrote a series of diaries starting in 1933 when he was in school in Pennsylvania. He moved as quickly as he could to New York as so many gays do. While not salacious and sometimes pretty tedious, the books offer much insight as to what it was like to be a gay man in those days and up into the 1980's. Eventually Donald meets a lover and they have a very open relationship together for some 43 years, living together in later life. For anyone interested in gay life and particularly gay life in New York City, these books, mostly self-published and even typed by Donald, are fascinating.
