This is a very enjoyable story, with likeable characters and vivid descriptions of Alaskan scenery. The author describes the Iditarod trail in great detail, allowing the reader to realistically experience the pitfalls of the race along with the characters in the book. The story is about an Inupiat woman who follows her dream of running the Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. The fascinating culture of the Inupiat people is decribed in many parts of the story, adding an educational element. Discussion of the precarious fate of the Arctic refuge is also included. Respect for nature and equality of the sexes are prominant recurring themes. After reading this, one wants to see Alaska in person to fully experience the lonesome, rugged wildness of America's last unspoiled wilderness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, dogs, or the great outdoors. One note: Some romantic scenes may not be suitable for some younger readers.
