I have drawn from this well for 17 years

I was fortunate enough to be a student of Dr. Seamands' when he was beginning to assemble this material. I heard many snippets of this book as classroom devotions in 1990. I can still remember them! So from my early notes to this actual book....this material has been one of my main wells of renewal in these last seventeen years of ministry. Thank you Dr. S! Passionate, practical, prophetic.

Renewing Burnt Out Pastors

Steve Seamands has a heart for pastors. I knew that the first time I met him as a student in his class at Asbury Seminary. That is why I picked up his book.It couldn't have come at a better time in my ministry. You see, this book is written for disillusioned, burnt out pastors--and that afternoon, I certainly fit the bill.Seamands leads the reader through a study of Christ's words to another, very disillusioned, pastor--the Apostle Peter. Jesus restored Peter to ministry that day over grilled fish on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Seamands looks at the implications of these words for pastors in ministry today. In the process, he he discusses the challenges that pastors face in the local church. How do you stay motivated when you are confronted with parishoners who do not want change in "their church", apathy, and professional jealousy? He doesn't deny that pastors will feel inadequate, overworked, or overwhelmed in the face of an unending swell of human need. Instead he turns the reader's attention to the source of supernatural strength--Jesus Christ. One of the things I most appreciated was Seamands openness and honesty. He is the kind of man that many of us place high on a pedestal. He is well respected in his own right and is a member of one of Methodism's most influential families. Yet this particular "pedestal dweller" never hesitates to share his own painful experiences or shortcomings. As you read the book you realize that this is far more than sympathy--it is empathy from a man who has walked through difficult times in the parish. His candor is both refreshing and inspiring.I highly recommend this book for anyone feeling overwhelmed by his or her ministry. It is certainly something that the Holy Spirit can use as an instrument of grace.
