A very interesting way of framing a historical study. The author tells the story of German constitutionalism, beginning with the plethora of German monarchical states, through unification in 1871, and up to the mid-1980's. He lays out the beginnings of political parties, and traces how nationalism, liberalism, parliamentarianism, and federalism make their way into being in various states, and how they influence both national and local politics.
Really quite a tough read. I got a lot out of it, but I had to work at it quite a lot.
