Rev. Gilbert Reid was born in Laurel, NY in 1857. He graduated from Whitestown Seminary in 1875, and the Union Theological Seminary in 1882. Reid went to Shanghai, China in 1882 to begin mission work, and he founded the International Institute of China (I.I.C.) in 1894. He was also the editor of the Peking Post. During the First World War he was deported to Manila by the Chinese government and accused of being a German sympathizer. He was allowed to return to China in 1921 and resume his missionary and humanitarian work. He died in Shanghai in 1927. This work was originally published in the Biblical World, January 1916.
