A heroine who rises to the challenge

You have to love a heroine who is willing to open her home and heart to her disabled birth mother and a tiny niece she's never met before -- especially when she has issues about her ability to care for a child. Lisa Clarke is that kind of heroine and author Stella MacLean had me rooting for Lisa to get her happy ending with former fiance, Mason Stephens. Mason is a true hero, too -- willing to do all he can to help and protect Lisa even after the unhappy ending of their earlier relationship. Though Lisa and Mason have lots growing to do and obstacles to overcome as they rebuild their relationship, I could feel the strong bond between them that never completely broke. It was inspiring to watch them change and grow through the course of the story, confronting issues from their pasts and breaking old patterns of behaviour. Both of Stella MacLean's earlier books dealt with older heroines and love that evolved over the long haul. While I missed the author's skillful movement between the past and present that made those stories so unique and memorable, this book contained echoes from the past as Lisa's birth mother shared memories of her marriage. Once again, Stella MacLean has penned a heartwarming tale of romance rekindled and love that conquers all!

Life Changes

Just when you think you've got life all figured out, you're thrown for a loop. For lonely Lisa Clarke, it was when she found out the mother who'd given her up for adoption was waiting for her with open arms. The happy news came with two bonuses: a sister and a niece. Just when Lisa starts adjusting to all the changes, she discovers her feelings for her ex-fiance have returned. How does she fit him into her life, especially when it looks like he's moving across the country? Ms. MacLean's story examines the issues of family, love and remaining true to oneself. She does a masterful job of showing the domino affect of one small change....

enjoyable family drama

In Durham, North Carolina nurse Lisa Clarke buries her adopted mother only to learn from the estate lawyer Tank Tweedsdale that her biological mom Carolyn Lewis is alive; she thought the woman who birthed her died in a car accident. Tank hires Lisa's former boyfriend Mason Stephens to find her mom, which he does. Lisa heads to Florida where her mom resides in Palmetto Bayside Nursing Home. Her older sister Anne Marie is in jail charged with trafficking. Needing to prove her sister's innocence, Lisa hires Mason and an attorney to do that. She takes her three year old niece Katie and mom back home with her. Mason is stunned with how good a caretaker Lisa is as she rejected children leading to their breakup. However, his former wife Sara plans to leave for the other coast with their son putting him on the spot of choosing east with his Lisa or west with his offspring Peter. This is an enjoyable family drama with a second chance at love subplot. Lisa matures as she takes charge of her newly found biological family. Although Mason is a better sleuth than boyfriend material, fans will enjoy this fine contemporary. Harriet Klausner
