A Brief Overview on Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is defined as an acute peripheral facial neuropathy which is associated with erythematous vesicular rash of the skin of the ear canal, auricle (also known as herpes zoster oticus) and mucous membrane of the oropharynx. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is also known as nervus intermedius neuralgia or geniculate neuralgia. Sometimes Ramsay Hunt syndrome can also occur without skin rash. This condition is also known as zoster sine herpete. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is not contagious. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is defined as Varicella zoster virus infection of head and neck that involves the facial nerve (7th cranial nerve) (CN VII). Other cranial nerves CN VIII, IX, V and VI might be also involved. For the diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome laboratory tests are done for the presence of Varicella zoster virus and also imaging studies with CT scan or MRI and other tests for hearing and eyes are done. For the management of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Corticosteroids, and antiviral drugs like Acyclovir, Famciclovir or valacyclovir and Antibiotics are used.
