Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to have been born and growing up on a farm where electric power and indoor plumbing were non existant?A BOY FROM SHAWBORO reveals a way of life that no longer exists when life was simple. The setting for this story was in Currituck County, North Carolina in the 1930's. Our family lived during the depression years and World War II. People today do not realize how close the east coast German U-boats were as US ships were sunk in view of those living near the coasts of the eastern United States. The writing describes teen age pranks and escapades during the fifties and leading two different lives, one of a wholesome lifestyle for the respect of family and friends, the other which we kept secret. Among some of the secrets, we kept under cover were going to burlesque shows under age 18, and looking for women in the bars of downtown Norfolk, and using fictious names, and pranks such as slipping Feenamint into Chiclets boxes using boy scout camping trips as a ruse for staying out all night. It also tells of repairing and selling old cars and high school FFA hazing. Some high school students drove school busses.A Boy from Shawboro reveals life in the US NAVY during the Korean War era and how a farmer with little experience married and left the farm to begin a new life in a culture completely different from that of Currituck County, North Carolina.The book reveals the struggle of keeping marriage alive and raising a handicapped child while facing the street temptations of police officers. It also tells of finally making a career in aviation , an aircraft instructor,raising a family, retirement, and becoming a becoming a substitute teacher after retirement.
