UNDERSTANDING KIDS

It is really a great book and basically this book is for both parents and kids. For kids it makes them to be more knowledgeable in somethings they dont know by asking question about it and for parent it give them a good opportunity to be able to share with there kids what they dont know and given good answers to there questions which makes them happy and have confident in their parents.

Taken our Ghanaian kids back to their roots

I find the book very useful in that it has helped in linking my two children back to their roots. My children have been in Ghana for a only a short visit and since they were born abroad they know very little about Ghana. My children read the book and the questions that were asked enabled me bridge the information gap. I therefore recommend it for other kids especially those who were born abroad.

Something Different To Read

Every child that reads this book will surely fall in love with Sweetie Awo. For the most part, the way this little girl celebrates Christmas in Africa makes this book so fun to read. It is also a book for anyone who wants to learn about a typical african family life. For one, it illustrates the big family in Africa with grandparents, uncles, and other relatives involvement in every child's life.

Taste the life of an African Child

Though "A Big Christmas Surprise for Sweetie Awo" narrates Awo's expectations for christmas, it also presents real life scenes and experiences of a child growing up in Africa. The family settings, social events, school life, sports, friendships, etc. outlined in the book truly presents to the world at large the real African life/culture. Reading the book will certainly take a non-African child on a "trip" to Africa.I commend Flora for this excellent piece.

It's about time!

I have always found it problematic to present Africa in the eyes of a child; a vast continent housing various societies who proudly live out the social relations of everyday life, away from the media staple of misery and poverty fed to the West. For African children in the diaspora, including mine, A Big Christmas Surprise conveys `where we come from,' a typical world where children remain children, basking in the attention of their parents, siblings, extended family members and friends, despite the challenges of daily life. For outsiders to these cultures the story line here may present a different world, but one with children's imaginations and experiences they can easily relate to. Such children's stories are long overdue. I commend Flora Trebi-Ollennu for telling this one story and hope she continues to feed these little curious minds in subsequent publications.
