A proposal inspired by the opportunity to present at Valparaiso University's Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Seminar: Race and the Law. The purpose of this proposal is to inspire a greater dialogue about what is needed in order to create harmony between the community and law enforcement agencies throughout the country. The proposal begins with a question: What makes a better police force? The question is answered by sharing the experiences of a former educator and the challenges she faced in creating a better classroom. Although comparing a classroom to the police force is highly discouraged, readers are encouraged to consider the fact that both are groups of individuals who can be shaped and molded into their full potential. The proposal then provides the seven techniques that made a better classroom and goes even further to express how these same techniques may be used and applied to the police force to create a better, stronger, and more thorough law enforcement agency.
