A great place to start

All I knew was that I wanted to be a animator. This book helped me understand the basics (where what was and what it did) it doesn't go into incredible detail but does teach you how to acheive an effect. I would not recommend this book to someone who knows what lofting, mesh warps, nurbs, uvw mapping, or kinetics are. If what I just wrote to you is like greek buy this book if you can say sure thats easy avoid this one.

A great read!

Very informative and gets you to the basics. Offers step-by-step tutorials, very easy to understand most topics. If I can use Max after reading this, anyone can! The only gripe I have is that I found it a bit difficult to get to grips with the animation topics.

Best book in understanding 3D MAX

This book is what you need when you start in Computer Animation! It is easy to understand and it have all the information necesary to do a profesional Animation. I do Computer Animation for 3 years and till now never found a book that explains all the terms in a way that everybody understands! It is a must have!!

great for beginners

Great book to start learning 3D Studio Max! After you have gone though this book, try Inside 3D Studio Max.

Fundamentals is a must have for all MAX user levels.

3D Studio MAX Fundamentals is written with two types of people in mind: 1)Individuals progressing from earlier releases to MAX, and 2)People with no MAX experience whatsoever. This book gives both beginners and experts a solid grounding in the basics of this incredible new program. The first few chapters walk you through the new interface, and a tutorial that incorporates most of the features of the program, reserving the later chapters to cover the more advanced features like video post, space warps, and particle systems. Most of the functions are accompanied with a tutorial example, a feature lacking in some other books. Issues concerning the material editor, and the new modeling interface are cleared up, and the interface and file types are clearly diagrammed and explained in the appendices and cover flaps. All in all, if you are migrating from release 4 to MAX, just starting out, or finding your basic skills lacking in areas, this book will get you well underway to making MAX work for you
