Islam is a monotheistic religion based on the beliefs and practices revealed in the Quran and the teachings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), known as the Sunnah.
Muslims consider the Qur'an to be the literal meaning of Allah and to contain guidance for all aspects of life, including beliefs, morality, social behavior and relationships. Composed of the words, actions, and endorsements of the Prophet Muhammad, the Hadith provides further detail and explanation of the principles laid down in the Qur'an.
Islam teaches that there is only one Allah (Allah) and Muhammad was his last prophet. Muslims are required to observe the five pillars of Islam: the declaration of faith (shahada), prayer (salah), almsgiving (zakat), Ramadan (sawm) and the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj).
Islam emphasizes the importance of justice, compassion and respect for all and promotes a community-centered way of life. The ultimate goal of a Muslim is to please God and enter Paradise in the afterlife.
