1962: Baseball and America in the Time of JFK

In the watershed year of 1962, events and people came together to reshape baseball like never before. The season saw five no-hitters, a rare National League playoff between the Giants and the Dodgers, and a thrilling seven-game World Series where the Yankees, led by Mickey Mantle, won their twentieth title, beating the San Francisco Giants, led by Willie Mays, in their first appearance since leaving New York.

Pedestrian Writing, Sloppy Editing

Too many mistakes. Don’t buy. Mistakes caught: Tommy Davis was 8 years old when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and not 18 years old as stated in the book. Jim Gilliam’s retired number is 19 and not 17 as stated in the book. The Angels played at Dodger Stadium from 1962-65, not 1961-65 as stated in the book. Roger Craig won only one World Series in his whole career, which was in Brooklyn in 1955. The books credits him with 2 and that both came as a Brooklyn Dodger. Willie Mays had a .524 OBP in 1951 in AAA that caused him to be called up to the NYG. The book says he had a .356 OBP and a .477 BA. Impossible to have a .477 BA and an OBP that’s lower than that. Sloppy writing and nonexistent editing. Don’t buy.

Excellent Telling of Baseball and Culture In America in 1962

David Krell has written a detailed and well researched account of the year 1962. The compelling National league playoff series between the Giants and Dodgers, as well as the World Series that was decided in the last at bat of Willie McCovey is covered in detail. However, Krell has written much more than a baseball book as he delves into the movies, television shows and books of that year, and historical events such as our nascent space program and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Highly recommended for not only fans of baseball, but to those interested in the cultural history of our country in the time of President Kennedy.
