easy enough for the beginner

I checked out this book from our local library and found that I have put post it notes on about half of the book. My husband had noticed the pages marked and had the idea to go online and find the book for me as a gift. He is now starting to venture into the quilt making world and is not affraid to enter a quilting store. The book arrived in new condition at my work site and what a surprise.....I would recommend this book to someone that might be having trouble with color options and the blank pattern pages are a great tool.

A Beginner's Point of View

Please bear in mind that I am quite the novice.I bought this book for a quilting class I took. We made a table runner from one of the patterns. The quilt shop had offered several classes based on this book and it was quite popular. The quilts on display were fabulous. However, as a beginner, without the hands-on assistance at the class, I would have struggled with the pattern and probably given up!That being said, if you have any quilting experience I think you would like this book! It has great illustrations, helpful grids for designing your own variations, and clever nine-patch patterns. The nine-patch was fun to work with and my table runner is striking. And the book has inspired me to try another nine-patch.

Great beginner and intermediate reference material

Marti has used computer generated graphics and photographs to describe how the humble nine-patch can be used to create more than just a nine-patch look. She has quick tips as well as in-depth explanations. This is the first book (and I have a bundle) that puts into plain and simple terms how to put blocks on point. She explains how to calculate the setting triangles, corner triangles, and why they are cut differently. She also explains her reasons for cutting strips on the grain rather than cross grain. The book has excellent diagrams indicating the overall look, and points out just where that nine-patch block is. Look at the pattern "Sticks and Stones" to see just how effective the nine-patch can be!
