Great Book of Names

I am using it to find names for my soon to be born twins and as a writer to name the characters in my stories. It is great.

A great resource

This book is an incredible resource for choosing your baby's name. The book is very easy to read, the sections were easy to find and the references to names inspred by famous peoplle, places and things was very interesting- as was the section of names that celebrities gave their kids (those pooe kids!!). I bought this book for my son to help him with naming my grandchild-to-be and originally bought Mr. Lansky's book 25 years ago for help naming my kids. Glad he's still around!

easy to use, fun, and informative

This is a great book for anyone who needs to pick out names, whether for a baby, a pet, or characters in a book you're writing. There are literally over 100,000 names in here, from modern quirky to old-fashioned classics. The book is arranged in an easy to use manner, making it a snap to find what you're looking for. The two main sections are for boys and girls, each name listing having the name's origin, meaning, and alternate spelling and forms in alphabetical order. Plus there are many short lists toward the front for specific catagories, including Mythological, musicians by genre, actors, Old West, and even names from the Harry Potter series. The list of the top 100 names and the top names from around the world are helpful as well. If that wasn't enough, there is also a section about legal concerns and another for fun name trvia. I highly recommend this book if you need to come up with some names, or research where your's came from.

Many options

My 8-month pregnant friend and I spent an entire vacation combing this book for a name for her little one. There were some liberties taken with root names (Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzie, Liza) and the like to increase the count, but generally a good resource - the most comprehensive we found. Plus we loved the lists at the beginning of the book, where you could see popular names by decade, names of stars, their kids, shakespearean names, etc., etc. Good buy.

We found our first son's name in this book. I like that the books gives the top 25 most popular names for every decade for the past 200 years or so, and the most popular names from countries around the world. There are also a lot of fun lists titled, "Names Inspired by People, Places and Things," which include characters from various books, TV shows, movies, & stories, sports figures, singers, nature inspired names, and names to match personalities. The main part of the book lists names in alphabetical order (one section for girls & one for boys). There are over 600 pages of names, over 100,000 names. It gives the name in bold print, the origin, the meaning, and alternative spellings. People LOVE our son's name, as do we. I would definately recommend this book to parents looking for names for their unborn baby. We were looking for Irish names and found many we loved, even though we had to look through all the names to find just the Irish names. I'm just a Mom, obssessed with finding the PERFECT name, and this book was very helpful to me!! This book is FUN, too.

Excellent resource! Ignore pre-biased reviews....

I suspect the previous review from "Mom Of One" must be unnaturally biased or somehow associated with a competitor's title because it appears that she only exists sporadically enough to tout her chosen title, and then belittle its competitors. Nothing else currently seems to exist for this entity. Worst of all, "she" disclaims this book as being a copy of a title published in 2005 (first edition 2003), when a quick look-up shows that this publisher: Meadowbrook / Lansky, has been making baby name books since the late 70s/early 80s and is clearly one of the leaders in the field. This book is great as a resource, names neatly alphabetized with their origin and meaning, in an astounding range of ethnicities and languages. 100,000 names! I think that's more names than any other title on the market of this subject, and I love that it has French, Greek, Japanese, Hawaiian (!!!), African, Latvian, Spanish, Chinese - you name it! So you're not limited in any way, even names and their offshoots (i.e. names evolved from other names) are included. A pretty great resource for would-be parents and writers alike. I'm still a year or two off from family planning with the significant other, but I've browsed through this for the future ...and of course everyone looks up their own name. I've used this title as part of a gift basket to two of my planning & expectant friends, and they've both loved it and used it extensively. One of the gifted copies seems to be a permanent fixture on a coffee table and considerably dog-eared. Great gift on its own to 'soon-to-be' parents, or put it in a basket with some bottles, a couple of bibs, baby t-shirt and plush toy and you've got a pretty terrific baby shower gift.
