From awe-inspiring skyscrapers designed to be noticed to the impressive engineering of the bridges, tunnels, and energy-generating wind fields, viaducts, and dams for which function is just as important as form, 100 MODERN MARVELS OF THE WORLD displays some of the most fascinating feats of architecture and engineering in the modern world. This volume includes famous landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and the CN Tower, as well as less-visible projects like New York City's Third Water Tunnel. These are the buildings that cities are known for, the bridges and tunnels that move people from place to place, and the windfields and dams that provide power for millions. Each marvel gets a two-page spread that gives a brief explanation and history as well including sidebars with key statistics and facts. Marvels include: Germany's Reichstag Japan's Bullet Train The London Eye Egypt's Alexandria New Library Boston's Zakim (Bunker Hill) Bridge Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall United Arab Emirates' Burj al Arab Hotel China's Three Gorges Dam
I read this good book, here in Brazil. This book has many photos. In fact, more than 70% of its space are photos. All photos have color. This book has a paper of excellent quality, good hard cover and is very easy to read. In fact, I read all of it, in four hours and yesterday. Just one of these 100 marvels is did by Brazilians, the ITAIPU dam. Among the 100 marvels of this book are: 1-Three Gorges dam, in China. 2-Channel Tunnel, between England and France. 3-Millau Viaduct, in France. 4-Kaisay International Airport, in Japan. 5-Petronas Towers, in Malaysia. 6-Burj Al Arab Hotel, in United Arabs Emirates. 7-Burj Dubai, in United Arabs Emirates. 8-CN Tower,in Canada. 9-Kennedy Space Center, in the United States. 10-Shangai's Maglev Train, in China. The main problem of this book are about 40 "marvels" that aren't so marvelous. Why to put the Walt Disney Concert Hall and to forget the Disneyworld itself? Another problem of this book is the lack of details, for many marvels. Even so, I must give four stars for this book because it is cheap and very fast to read.
