Not quite what I expected, but still OK

I am an intermediate player, who was looking for something to help expand my music vocabulary. I was choosing between this one and a couple of other books with rock licks, and one thing that drew me to this one was the fact that it had a lot more pages than the other two I was looking at. Well, the dumba** I was, I didn't bother to check the book dimenstions (since most all music books are similar in size), so when the book came I was a little dissapointed, but hey. This book is not for an advanced player, and if you think you are intermediate, you might find some of it boring. The material is actually pretty basic, but still covers a big span of styles, so you will expand your vocabulary some. Actually I used to teach beginners, and I think this book is an awesome teaching tool, once a person gets past the basics. It explains the CAGED system, which is a very valuable tool in mastering the fretboard, and gives some explanation on the licks, rather than just listing them. I was hoping for a little more in-depth coverage of the individual styles, but not too much there, only a few basic ones for every player/style. Oh, and there is only one lick/riff spread over two pages, there is a lot more in pictures and background info. The backup CD is great, so no complaints there. I give it a generous 4, just because I have fun going through it, but it's not something that will help you become a solid soloist, it will just give you a good overview of most rock styles up to the '90s.

Invaluable encyclopedia of rock guitar styles

This book is truly amazing, I have never seen anything like it. All the rock techniques I've always wanted to learn are available here, with clear explanations and examples on accompanying CD. It's like having a guitar expert in your room teaching one-on-one. Aside from being a fantastic how-to book, it is a real encyclopedia, documenting rock guitar styles from the very begginnings in the early 50s to the golden age of Classic Rock in the 70s to the most cutting-edge contemporary rock of the last decade. The depth is quite remarkable, even things like country, rockabilly, progressive rock are covered. Naturally, Classic Rock is given the most space, and is covered in more depth. The style of the book is consistent throughout - there is a short intro to the technique, tablature explaining it, technical information on where to apply it, the harmony that can be used with it, and where to find an example on CD. Clever! Also, included are practice scales and modes, and some interesting concepts like CAGED/EDCAG system, which is most helpful to learn, or review ir you already know it. If you are a rock guitar enthusiast, then this book must be on your desk!
