Like so many baseball books, it is excellent fuel for arguments among fans

This book contains a brief biography and photographs of the baseball players that the author believes to be the 100 best hitters of all time. Written in 1988, it was too early to include Tony Gwynn, the player that has statistically been proven to be the best hitter of all time. As the author mentions in the introduction, choosing the first fifty was very easy, the next twenty-five took some thought but was rather quick, but the last twenty-five was difficult. I agree with this statement, there are some of those selected that I questioned and would have replaced. But that is the nature of being a baseball fan, one of the pleasures is to argue over who was the best player. One of the greatest aspects of baseball is that the enormous number of different statistics allows two equally knowledgeable fans to disagree. In batting, there is the batting average, slugging percentage, home runs, doubles, triples, RBI, bases on balls, and the more subjective statistic of hitting in the clutch. There is also the very subjective area of performance over a short time. Some of the players were excellent over only a few years, but that was enough for Minks to include them. Like nearly every book on baseball, the fan will find many things to argue over in this book. However, this is not a negative thing. In my opinion one of the best things about baseball is that two people can both be right and yet be in complete disagreement.
