This is just one of our favorite counting books. Just purchased it for our great nephew and niece who are 3 and 2. My youngest still wants to read it just for the fun ending where we giggle and giggle!
1 hunter

I read this book to my cousin's children ranging in age from 4-7. We all had fun guessing what the animals hiding in the background would be once we turned the page. The illustrations were great, they were very colorful and the numbers are large. All of the children's favorite part was the hunter running away from so many animals! I liked that it allowed me to include the group by having them count to the next number and then guessing what the animal would be. I also liked that at the end of the story we counted backwards to show that numbers aren't always presented lowest to highest. The book was best for the younger kids but the older kids liked it as well.
Great especially if you've recently visited a zoo

My 2.5 year old really got into the spirit of counting and numbers with this book. Especially great if your child likes finding hidden things like in the I-Spy books, or just peek-a-boo type of games. My daughter started asking for this book (which was already one of her second tier favorites) every night (thus elevating it to first tier) after our visit to SF zoo. I have difficulty explaining to her what a hunter is; not that that is central to the plot. We just laugh at the end when he is totally surprised and shocked to see all these animals following him all this time, and his glasses and his rifle fall from his hands and he is running for dear life! We are fans of all the Pat Hutchins books.
