Hitorijime My Hero Volume 12 (“I Don’t Want to Be Pitied…”)

Asaya has a complex about his boyfriend Ken calling him his older brother. At the same time, Kousuke’s and Masahiro’s relationship seems to be heading in the right direction until Kousuke briefly mentions the recipe he got from his ex. Kousuke’s memories reveal a young woman, possibly Kousuke’s ex, whom he wanted to leave. He also recalls Houjou discussing his plans to marry Ayaka. At the present, Kousuke’s and Ken’s father, Takamori, is working his fingers raw with his co-worker and wife, Miho, beside him. Without the parents’ home, Kousuke and Masahiro can do whatever they want at the Ohshiba house, even though Masahiro is still self-conscious about being intimate in someone else’s home (still, he lives there as well). Masahiro’s friends (Asaya, Ken, Shige, Yamabe, Chairman Yoshida, and Yunge—who seem to enjoy the drama in other people’s lives) check on Masahiro’s life with Kousuke. The problem comes when the high school teacher, Gozu, informs Masahiro that his mother has not answered the phone calls about their lack of payment for the practice exam and the upcoming school trip. Now that Masahiro’s boss at the Shoufuku Ramen restaurant has opened another store, Masahiro jumps at the opportunity to earn more money to pay for the debt his mother has left him. Eventually, Masahiro does let his financial situation slip to Kousuke and the boys (Asaya, Ken, Shige, Yamabe, Chairman Yoshida, and Yunge). The guys discuss whether Masahiro should rely on Kousuke to pay for everything, and Masahiro asks Kousuke if his decision not to go to college is okay. Before that, Houjou calls Kousuke, asking Kousuke how his relationship with Masahiro is going. After the call, Houjou reveals to Natsuo and Yunge that he’s having problems of his own, involving a letter from Ayaka, saying she wants a divorce. After a while, Houjou recognizes the only person who would want to break up their relationship—Ayaka’s and Asaya’s mother, Akiko. When Masahiro returns home, he observes his mother’s bad financial decisions. Masahiro realizes that he will have to watch his mother because, without supervision, she will spend all her money on clothes, shoes, and other wants. Unfortunately, Masahiro’s grades suffer due to his long nights at work and his split attention. Kousuke confronts Masahiro about his grades and the financials. Amidst all the drama of these boys, there’s a rumor going around that Kousuke’s wife left him, and he is determined to prove them wrong. Masahiro makes a new friend at work—her name is Nangou. She might or might not be Kousuke’s ex; further reading will tell. Also, Kousuke somehow manages to sneak a peek at Masahiro’s future career plans worksheet and likes what he sees. Meanwhile, Asaya, Ken, Shige, and Yamabe head to a community game tournament. Even though Shige was the one wanting to play, he has an emergency and has Yamabe substitute for him, then Ken for Yamabe. Ken is an expert player but turns away from the game to find Asaya so they can leave, but Ken’s opponent, Pei-taro, thinks Ken went easy on him. What will happen when Pei-taro won’t let Ken leave the arcade? Will Asaya do something? There are also hilarious short stories about Kousuke’s and Masahiro’s and Natsuo’s, and Yunge’s relationships. Kousuke gets talked into doing the chores by Ayaka, but Masahiro won’t allow him to do them, while Yunge gets jealous of Natsuo’s friend and physical therapist, Tateshina. Masahiro also decides to follow Yunge’s advice and purchases some aprons to use and admire on Kousuke. A lot was going on in this book. Kousuke and Masahiro are trying to work through some problems in their lives. Asaya may have some competition for Ken’s attention in the next book. I feel like Masahiro has decided he can depend on his group of friends a lot more now. There is a lot of drama in the series. I want to know why Ayaka’s and Asaya’s mother returned to ruin her daughter’s marriage. I feel sad for Houjou, despite all his weird kinks. I hope all the character
