May 6 - 12 Is "National Pet Week"

Part 6 in the Dog Blog series

By Linda Vandercook • May 07, 2018

My husband and I have eight pets—yes, eight, ocho, acht, åtta! I figured that as long as we (well, I, really) stay under double-digits, I am on the right side of "crazy-pet-lady."

Each of my pets has a cool quirk and reflects a facet in our lives. For example, we got our dog, PL, while my husband was in ROTC, and he would bring PL into school with him. Because of this, PL just loves anyone in uniform. My elder cat, Russell, was lucky enough to be fostered rather than remain at a shelter, and her foster family had a lot of other cats and dogs. This made Russell an expert at navigating other pets. She hangs out with all of my other pets and is friends with everyone. And my smallest bunny, Oliver (aka McLovin') sleeps with his eyes open. And he sleeps so deeply that the first time I saw this, I thought he'd died. It really freaks me out, but it also makes me wonder if he's maybe some sort of secret ninja bunny, ready for when danger strikes...

Here are some other pet fun facts:

  • A 5 lb bunny drinks as much water as a 20 lb dog—each day.
  • A group of cats is called a "clowder."
  • If a guy has a dog with him, he's three times more likely to get a girl's phone number.
  • A bunny can poop 300 times per day.
  • Cats can see some color, mainly grays and blues.
  • Your dog's sense of smell is 1,000-10,000 times stronger than yours. Hence, there is no way you can hide your food from him, no matter how quietly you open that fridge. Just sayin'.
