Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is known and remembered for his leadership during the civil rights movement. Born January 15, 1929, Dr. King was raised by minister and early civil rights activist father Martin Luther King Sr. and mother Alberta Williams King. For his civil rights work he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1964), Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977, posthumously awarded), and the Congressional Gold Medal (2004, posthumously awarded) and through that work he helped to build a more just world. He authored 6 books before his tragic assassination in 1968.
