Tom Clancy Profile Picture

Best known for his Cold War era thrillers, Thomas Leo Clancy, Jr. was an American novelist and historian. More than 100 million of his books are in print, including some non-fiction books on military subjects written by ghost writers. Better known as Tom Clancy, he was born in Baltimore in 1947. Clancy graduated from Loyola College (now Loyola University) in Baltimore with B.A. in English literature. His career in insurance began after graduation. It was while working at an agency that Clancy wrote The Hunt for Red October, which eventually became a national bestseller. That first novel, along with Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears, have become commercially successful movies featuring stars such as Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin and Liev Schreiber. Other works have been adapted into television films and mini-series. Clancy was also the author of non-fiction books about the American military services and the creator of numerous video games loosely based on his novels. He died in 2013.
