Author of over fifty bestselling fantasy novels for adults and young adults, Sir Terence David John Pratchett is better known as Terry Pratchett. Born in 1948 in Buckinghamshire, England, Pratchett was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998 and was knighted for services to literature in 2009. His many honors also include nine honorary doctorates, the Carnegie Medal, and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. Pratchett's novels have been widely adapted for radio, television, film, graphic novels, and stage. When the BBC conducted The Big Read in 2003 to identify the "Nation's Best-loved Novel," Pratchett led all the authors with fifteen novels in the Top 200. In 2007, he announced that he was suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Since that announcement, Pratchett has continued to write by dictating to an assistant.
