Louis Sachar Profile Picture

Louis Sachar, born in East Meadow, New York in 1954, moved to California when he was in the third grade. He attended Antioch College in Ohio and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in economics. Sachar worked as a teacher's aide at an elementary school while in college. This inspired his first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, which he wrote in the evenings while working in a warehouse. The book was accepted by a publisher when he was starting at Hastings School of the Law in San Francisco. After graduating from law school, Sachar practiced law part-time while writing children's books. In 1989, he became a full-time writer. Holes His book Holes won the U.S. National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the Newbery Medal. Sachar lives in Austin, Texas.
