Jerome David Salinger was born in 1919 and raised in New York City. After briefly attending New York and Columbia Universities, he concentrated on writing, winning early acclaim for short stories he submitted to The New Yorker before being drafted into the army in 1942. In 1951, The Catcher in the Rye, his only novel, gained immediate success and continues to be widely read. Responding to the attention, Salinger became famously reclusive, publishing his last original work in 1965, giving his final interview in 1980, and dying in early 2010.
